Another good reason to get out of the UK

There are many many good reasons to get out of the UK, but another one emerged today, with the release of the 2010 Corruption Perceptions Index. Following the expenses scandal, the UK has dropped to 20th and now rates at 7.6.

By contrast, a group of relatively small, independent states, where elected representatives are closer to the people have come out on top:

"Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore are tied at the top of the list with a score of 9.3, followed closely by Finland and Sweden at 9.2."

I wonder how Scotland would fare if taken out of the UK - i's certainly a shame that our reputation around the world is being tarnished by association with the Westminster regime.

Yes, but we had our expenses scandal 5 years ago.

The reason that came about was because of the much more robust Freedom of Information legislation we passed up here thanks to the Liberal Democrats:-)

We do very well as part of the UK, I think. I've never been able to understand the attraction of independence. I think more powers for Holyrood while being part of the UK for things that it makes sense for.

Come on - our expenses scandal was very tame by comparison! FOI is a good thing, but omits a lot and I believe a review is still ongoing to fix the holes.

Independence is about doing things better at a level closer to the people; I think we're more than capable as a nation of making that work. There's nothing in the status quo which comes close to achieving that, we're always held back in what we could do.

I doubt we'll ever find out in the near future.

Caron's last paragraph sums up what the problem is.

They think we do well within the union basically as they have no vision and are quite happy with the status quo in how they see it. We have been asking for years for a unionist to explain the advantages of union, to date non have brought forward any plausable reason.

They cant understand what attracts people to independence maybe that again could be described as 'selfish' as my life is ok. Maybe if they considered that their next door neighbour had control over their income and decided how much they would give them back to live on keeping the rest to fund their holiday pot.

Surely Glasgow would get a minus score based on your Labour chums' shenanigans?

Funnily enough Jim, you're not the first person to bring that up! None of them has actually gone to prison though, so that still sets Westminster in a slightly higher league... ;-)
